Where to start wallpapering?
Choosing wallpaper for your home is an important step in decorating your space. It adds a unique style and ambiance to each room, depending on the pattern or color you choose. However, it's often hard to know where to start when it comes to wallpapering. In this article, we’ll guide you step by step to help you know where to begin and ensure a perfect result for your project.
Selecting the right wall
First, it’s essential to carefully choose the wall on which you want to apply the wallpaper. It should be clean, dry, smooth, and free of imperfections (cracks, peeling, etc.). Additionally, to avoid difficulties during installation, choose a wall with as few disruptive elements as possible, such as electrical outlets, radiators, or windows.
Consider the room’s characteristics
Before starting to wallpaper, consider the specifics of the room where you plan to apply it:
- Humid rooms: In bathrooms or kitchens, opt for wallpaper that is resistant to moisture and water splashes.
- Exposure to light: Some wallpapers may fade over time when exposed to strong light. Choose suitable materials for well-lit rooms.
- Room size: Patterns and colors affect the visual effect of a room. For example, large patterns may make a small room feel smaller, while light shades can make it appear bigger.
Where to start when wallpapering
Once you have chosen the right wall and considered the room’s characteristics, it’s time to choose a starting point for applying the wallpaper. Several options are available to you:
Start near a corner or recess
The first option is to begin near a corner of the room. Corners usually provide a more discreet transition between strips and ensure a neat finish. However, make sure your first strip is perfectly vertical to avoid inconsistencies in the patterns.
If your room has a recess or niche, it’s advisable to start the wallpaper application next to it. This way, the wallpaper will go behind the element, offering a flawless finish later.

Use a central element as a guide
In some rooms, it may be interesting to use a central element as a starting point. This could be a fireplace, a picture, or a large piece of furniture. You can then begin applying the wallpaper from this element, ensuring that the patterns are aligned and the strips are vertical.
Measuring, marking, and pasting: key steps for wallpaper application
Once you’ve determined where to start applying your wallpaper, here are the main steps to follow for a successful installation:
- 1. Measure: Using a tape measure, measure the height of the wall from the floor to the ceiling and add about 10 centimeters. This value will be the total length of the wallpaper strips to be cut.
- 2. Mark the starting point: Use a pencil to draw a vertical line on the wall that will serve as a guide for aligning your first strip. If starting near a corner, this line should be about 50 cm from it.
- 3. Paste: Depending on the type of wallpaper (pre-pasted or not), apply the adhesive to the back of the first strip and let it rest for the time recommended by the manufacturer. If you are using paste-the-wall wallpaper, you can also apply the adhesive directly to the wall.
- 4. Apply: Place your first wallpaper strip following the pencil marks and ensure that the patterns are well-aligned. Smooth the strip with a wallpaper brush to avoid air bubbles, and press the edges with a roller to guarantee a clean finish.
- 5. Trim: Finally, using a cutter or a wide-bladed spatula, trim any excess wallpaper at the floor and ceiling to achieve a perfect finish.
By following these steps and carefully choosing your starting point, you’ll ensure a successful wallpaper application and create a harmonious look in your home. Happy decorating!
